Wood pendant necklace, ‘Crawling Lizard’

Crawling up an adjustable length of cotton cord, a Balinese gecko is hand-carved of sawo wood in this charming pendant necklace. It is crafted by Made Sumerta, a member of the Bhakti Senang Hati association that provides work for local artisans with disabilities.

“I’ve seen many storms in my life, but I’m no longer blaming myself or my limited physical abilities,” the artisan says. “As a child, I suffered poliomyelitis, which weakened my legs and I can’t go anywhere myself. But I can create something useful and beautiful with my own two hands.”
